Barbara Vassallo & Mountain Lady Farm

Barbara Vassallo came to the mountains of Western North Carolina to relax and do some golfing. Joining a stitching group at Purl’s Yarn Emporium got her into the local fiber arts scene. Then a Mountain Man stopped by her property and encouraged her to plant a garden and put in a fence. Bit by bit, the scope of her garden expanded, and before she quite knew what had happened, Barbara was running a farm with crops, chickens, and her beloved Pygora goats (a cross between angora and pygmy goats). She needed help, so the Mountain Man brought local kids to do chores. That was when Barbara realized that she’d, almost by accident, started Mountain Lady Farm.

25% of the purchase price of this yarn in Barbaras colorway goes to Mountain Lady Farm.
Children ages 6 to 18 earn credits working on Barbara’s farm. They plant, weed, and harvest the garden; take care of animals; weave, spin, and make other crafts; they even create the web site. Through all these kinds of work, they learn useful skills and self-confidence. Credits are then used to buy school supplies and clothes for the children; food from the farm is given to the sick and needy of the community. Barbara has gained the love and trust of the people of Sandy Mush because she listens to them and accepts them. She is a true Local Hero and a loving neighbor.
